Lexus LX 570 Caps Title Season With Baja 1000 Victory

Lexus LX Baja 1000 image
Displaying the same perseverance and resiliency that helped him survive cancer, racer Joe Bacal—with plenty of help from co-drivers Chris Cocores, Bob Ditner and Paul Williamson—piloted a Lexus LX 570 to the winner’s circle in the recentBaja 1000, one of the world’s most grueling off-road competitions. It was the fourth win this year for Bacal and the Lexus, which is sponsored by the Cancer Treatment Centers of America. That kind of performance helped him take home the 2010 SCORE Stock Full driver championship, catapulted Lexus to the manufacturer’s title and gave Bacal’s crew the team championship.
It certainly wasn’t easy, though. Bacal and Cocores got off to a fast start in the Baja race, but less than 200 miles into the event, the wheels started to fall off—literally: “I felt great and we were making excellent time until a wheel came loose around mile 180,” said Bacal. “The loose wheel caused some damage that took quite a while to repair.”
That was the start of a rash of bad luck that saw the team idled for hours on end during the cold desert night as they fought to get the Lexus back in the race. When that was finally accomplished, Bacal knew it would take a near-flawless drive the rest of the way, over some 680 miles of treacherous off-road terrain, to achieve a victory. Luckily, that’s exactly what he and his squad delivered.
“This one was a nail-biter—a real test for everyone,” added Bacal. “But my team stayed with it and we got ourselves back in the race. With the problems behind us we just flew to the finish line.”

Naturally, a full range of options are available as well, led by Lexus’ sixth-generation navigation system. This innovate unit showcases the company’s exclusive Remote Touch controller, which operates like a computer mouse and does away with the need for touch-screen controls. As a result, the navigation screen can be mounted in a more ergonomic location that offers improved sight lines for the driver.
2011 Lexus CT 200h interior imageThe driver also enjoys an enthusiast-oriented cockpit, with a wide-grip steering wheel, pedals strategically placed for performance driving, and a 10-way power seat with lumbar support and side bolsters. Further adding to the driving excitement in the CT 200h is a unique performance-damping system from Yamaha, which helps minimize body vibrations, deliver a more linear steering feel and enhance ride and handling.
And remember, all those features and amenities come in addition to the car’s cutting-edge hybrid-drive unit. This system offers four separate driving modes, including a driver-selectable EV mode in which the CT 200h emits no emissions at all. There’s also a “Normal” mode for regular driving, a “Sport” mode for higher levels of on-the-road performance and an “Eco” mode for higher levels of at-the-pump performance. The bottom line here: EPA ratings of 43 mpg city/40 mpg highway/42 mpg combined.
“For just $1,000 more than the cost of a non-luxury hybrid, buyers can indulge in a CT 200h with our proven Lexus Hybrid Drive technology,” said Mark Templin, group vice president and general manager, Lexus Division. “Lexus hybrids currently make up 90 percent of all luxury hybrid sales in the U.S., so you can imagine how excited we are to continue our leadership in this market with the CT 200h.”
